self organized deliberation

So how do you use self organization to debate a controversial subject? How do you create consensus when opinions are divided, without imposing one view over the other?

I think it will inevitably have to do with the distillation of values untill a consensus level is reached, and then a build and compromise process from there, with an eye for unambiguous language, perfect honesty, and emotional understanding.

It is difficult to concieve of the distinction between "self organized" discussion, and "conventional discussion."

In a self-organized system there are no externally imposed controlling authorities or moderators to guide the debate or filter unruly users. That's not to say there can't be moderators or filtering rules, just that they can't be imposed external to the debate.

Is there any sort of consensual social/techical structure that can support debate of emotionally charged & polarized issues, for instance religion & politics?

This would be exceedingly difficult to achieve unless the deliberating parties have a fundamental interest in the process of fair, civil and honest deliberation.
Even if one has a firm mindset about any given issue, there is a big difference between advocating that point of view and between drawing up the friend-or-foe camp line.
This distinction has to be clear and acknowledged by all participants.
I think that in today's world there are far too many debates that aim to pit ideological groups against each other under the false claim of fairness when all they are (intentionally) promoting is a brawl.

All claims of fairness are false, to some degree. Bias is something to be understood, not defeated.

              Tim,

I think conflict, even strenuous or rule-breaking conflict, is integral to the dynamics of self-organziation. Phase transition can occur when the dynamic equilibrium of internally counter-acting forces is ruptured. When one force perturbs the system past its dynamic equilibrium, the system will reorganize itself around the new control parameter. So with nature, so too with the spirit.

What you're talking about here in my reading is constraint. In order to maintain the dynamic equilibrium of this discussion, you are disallowing statements of a certain valence or charge, lest they compromise the symmetry of the Tribe. I think that's the perfectly appropriate function of a moderator, and consistent with the goals of liberty. I think you did a good job of cooling down that last thread.
